Where can I find military planes on the radar?
Military traffic is easiest to find when you know which aircraft are likely to transmit, where they are publicly based and what their flight patterns look like. Use this guide as a starting point—not a promise that a particular aircraft is airborne.
What public flight radar actually reveals
Public flight trackers show cooperative surveillance data received from aircraft and ground networks. When ADS-B Out is active, an aircraft can broadcast information such as position, altitude and groundspeed. The map is therefore a view of available signals—not a complete picture of military aviation.
Large support aircraft are usually better targets than fast jets. Transports, tankers, maritime patrol aircraft, airborne radar platforms and high-altitude surveillance aircraft spend longer in controlled airspace and often fly recognizable routes or holding patterns.
Why a military aircraft may transmit
Military crews can use normal surveillance equipment when training, ferrying an aircraft, crossing civilian-controlled airspace or operating where air traffic separation matters. Those safety and integration needs help explain why some flights appear on public radar.
The opposite is also true. Equipment, receiver coverage, operational security, local rules and data-sharing policies can all make a flight disappear. United States aviation guidance explicitly allows sensitive government missions to receive authorization to stop ADS-B Out transmissions when broadcasting would compromise operational security or safety.
- Routine transit and training are often easier to observe than tactical activity.
- Large support aircraft usually remain visible longer than fighters.
- Receiver coverage is weaker over oceans, remote terrain and some countries.
- A missing marker is not evidence that the airspace is empty.
A note about fighters
Eurofighter Typhoon, F-16 and other fighters can occasionally appear during ferry flights, training or movement through controlled airspace, but they are unreliable targets for public tracking. Short sorties, changing identifiers, sparse metadata and non-transmitting periods make them much harder to follow than tankers or transports.
How to search without chasing stale positions
Open the live radar, choose Military watch and begin at a regional scale. Look for aircraft type, callsign and movement together. A high-altitude RQ-4-like contact, a tanker flying a long racetrack or a transport moving between known airlift hubs is a stronger lead than a single unfamiliar callsign.
Treat the locations below as publicly documented basing and training context. Deployments change, aircraft rotate and yesterday’s interesting corridor may be quiet today. Move between regions, relax the freshness filter when necessary and inspect the aircraft profile before drawing conclusions.
Aircraft that are worth looking for
These are practical starting points rather than a live order of battle. “More likely” means comparatively visible among military traffic; it never means continuously available.
Global Hawk and NATO Phoenix
High-altitude, long-endurance surveillance- Where to look
- Sicily and the central Mediterranean · Grand Forks, North Dakota · Northern California
- Typical pattern
- Very high altitude, long transits and extended, stable tracks that can remain airborne for many hours.
NATO bases its RQ-4D fleet at Sigonella. United States Air Force units are associated with Beale and Grand Forks, but aircraft can rotate globally.
Stratofortress
Long-range strategic bomber- Where to look
- Barksdale, Louisiana · Minot, North Dakota · RAF Fairford during announced deployments
- Typical pattern
- Long-range transit, training loops or deployment movements, sometimes with tanker activity nearby.
RAF Fairford is a deployment location, not a permanent B-52 home base. Bomber Task Force movements are periodic and visibility is never assured.
Eurofighter Typhoon
Multirole fighter- Where to look
- RAF Coningsby · RAF Lossiemouth · North Sea training areas
- Typical pattern
- Short, fast training tracks, climbs and local sorties near fighter bases.
Typhoons may be visible in controlled airspace, but fighters are much less reliable public-radar targets than support aircraft.
KC-135 Stratotanker
Air-to-air refuelling- Where to look
- RAF Mildenhall · Eastern England and the North Sea · European exercise corridors
- Typical pattern
- Long racetrack-shaped orbits, repeated parallel legs and steady transit between tanker hubs.
A tanker-shaped track describes movement only. It does not prove that refuelling is taking place or that nearby aircraft are connected.
Dragon Lady
High-altitude reconnaissance- Where to look
- Beale, Northern California · Occasional forward-deployment routes
- Typical pattern
- Extremely high altitude, long climbs and lengthy tracks above ordinary airline traffic.
The U-2 can operate above 70,000 feet. Its unusual altitude can be a clue, but public visibility remains intermittent.
NATO E-3A AWACS
Airborne early warning and control- Where to look
- Geilenkirchen, Western Germany · North Sea · Baltic and multinational exercise areas
- Typical pattern
- Long-duration racetrack orbits and repeated turns at a stable working altitude.
NATO’s E-3A fleet is based at Geilenkirchen, but exercise areas and temporary operating locations vary.
C-17 Globemaster III
Strategic airlift- Where to look
- Pápa, Hungary · European airlift corridors · Transatlantic military routes
- Typical pattern
- Point-to-point transport flights that can resemble ordinary long-haul traffic.
The multinational Heavy Airlift Wing operates C-17s from Pápa. Route fields can still be incomplete or withheld.
P-8A Poseidon
Maritime patrol and reconnaissance- Where to look
- RAF Lossiemouth · North Atlantic and North Sea · Coastal training areas
- Typical pattern
- Coastal transits, elongated patrol legs, repeated turns and lower working altitudes over water.
The pattern alone cannot establish what a flight is doing. Maritime patrol, training and transit can produce similar tracks.
Start with the traffic pattern, not a single marker.
Sicily and the central Mediterranean
RQ-4D · tankers · maritime patrol · transportsNATO’s RQ-4D force is based at Sigonella, while the surrounding region supports frequent multinational movement.
Eastern England and the North Sea
KC-135 · Typhoon · AWACS · ISR supportRAF Mildenhall, Coningsby and nearby training airspace make this one of Europe’s most useful regions to scan.
Western Germany and Benelux
NATO E-3A · tankers · transportsGeilenkirchen provides a strong public basing reference and nearby corridors connect several European airlift hubs.
Northern Scotland and North Atlantic
Typhoon · P-8A · tankers · transportsLossiemouth hosts Typhoon and Poseidon aircraft, with open water nearby for training and patrol activity.
North Dakota

What to know before opening the radar
What is the easiest military aircraft to find on public radar?+
Large transports and tankers are usually the most practical starting points because they spend longer in controlled airspace and often fly recognizable point-to-point routes or racetrack patterns.
Where can I find RQ-4 Global Hawks?+
Good starting regions include Sicily around NATO’s RQ-4D base at Sigonella, Grand Forks in North Dakota and Northern California around Beale. RQ-4 tracks have also historically been reported over international waters in the Black Sea region. In the Middle East, the related US Navy MQ-4C Triton operates within the US 5th Fleet area, although a public track near the Persian Gulf, Gulf of Oman or Strait of Hormuz is never guaranteed. Aircraft rotate and missions change.
Where can I find B-52 bombers?+
Start around the documented B-52 home bases at Barksdale, Louisiana and Minot, North Dakota. RAF Fairford becomes relevant during announced Bomber Task Force deployments, although it is not a permanent B-52 base. During Bomber Task Force deployments and other publicly announced long-range training missions, B-52s may also appear over other European countries during multinational exercises, flypasts or commemorative events.
Can I track Eurofighter Typhoons?+
Sometimes. On Airplane Mode, publicly visible Typhoon tracks are often found around the British Isles, particularly near RAF Coningsby, RAF Lossiemouth and North Sea training areas. Fighter visibility is intermittent, and many sorties will not appear on public radar.
Why are most fighter jets missing?+
Public tracking depends on transmitting equipment, receiver coverage, identifiers and data-sharing. Tactical or sensitive activity may not broadcast usable public telemetry, and fast local sorties can be harder to receive consistently.
Does a military marker reveal the mission?+
No. Aircraft type, movement and location provide context, but they cannot establish mission, payload or intent.
