Aircraft capability guide

Recognize the role behind the aircraft type.

A type designator tells you which aircraft family is visible. A capability label translates that technical code into a useful role—without claiming to know why the aircraft is flying today.

01

Tanker and aerial refuelling aircraft

Tankers extend the range and endurance of other aircraft by transferring fuel in flight. Types such as the KC-135 family may appear under compact designators including K35R. Their tracks can look like ordinary transit, a long racetrack orbit or repeated work inside a refuelling area.

A tanker label describes the aircraft capability. A live track alone does not prove that refuelling is taking place, and nearby aircraft may be unrelated.

02

Transport and strategic airlift

Military transport aircraft move personnel, equipment and cargo. C-17, C-130, A400M and IL-76 families vary greatly in size and range but share an airlift role. They are among the military aircraft most likely to resemble ordinary point-to-point traffic on a global map.

Route metadata can help, but military transports may publish incomplete origins or destinations. Registration, operator callsign and type are often more useful than the displayed route alone.

03

ISR, AEW&C and maritime patrol

Intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft collect or relay information. Airborne early warning and control aircraft provide radar and command capability, while maritime patrol aircraft focus on activity over water. RQ-4 family aircraft are high-altitude, long-endurance unmanned systems and may appear under the Q4 type code.

These aircraft can spend long periods in repeated orbits, but a loiter pattern is not unique to surveillance. Training, calibration and holding can produce similar geometry.

  • ISR — intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance.
  • AEW&C — airborne early warning and control.
  • Maritime patrol — surveillance and patrol over coastal or ocean areas.
  • Drone / UAV — remotely piloted or highly automated aircraft systems.
04

Trainer, fighter, attack and bomber roles

Trainer aircraft prepare crews and can operate in dense groups near training bases. Fighter and attack aircraft are optimized for combat roles, while bombers are designed to carry large payloads over longer distances. Public telemetry for these categories is often incomplete or absent.

Speed and altitude alone cannot safely separate these roles. Type identification and registration context are much stronger signals, and unfamiliar contacts should remain unknown until the evidence improves.

Questions

What to know before opening the radar

What does K35R mean?+

K35R is an ICAO type designator used for the KC-135R tanker family.

What does Q4 mean on a flight tracker?+

Q4 is associated with the RQ-4 Global Hawk family of high-altitude, long-endurance unmanned surveillance aircraft.

Can an airliner type still be military?+

Yes. Military and state operators can use aircraft derived from commercial designs, so operator and registration context remain important.
